One-Sentence Story: Life Without Parole

Athenais by John William Godward

At a party on Mount Olympus, some of the gods started a discussion about capital punishment, and Hera, the wife of Zeus and one of the oldest of the gods, said in a tremulous voice, “I believe in capital punishment and here’s why: I think life in prison is worse than death so really it’s a more merciful solution...,” and Athena, thinking of all the people on death row who would do anything to be spared from final execution, interrupted her mother in a shocked and irritated voice, “How can you say that—you don’t even know what jail is like!” but Dionysus simply took another swig of wine and laughed, “She doesn’t know what being dead is like either,” and then there was a terrible pause, as if an abyss had opened up at their feet and they were teetering on its edge in horror, which lasted until Dionysus suddenly blurted, “Hey, how about those Giants! Did anyone manage to catch the game on Sunday?” and the abyss closed up.
